Peut-être faudra-t-il attendre le second volet, "Letters from Iwo Jima", dans lequel Eastwood aborde la bataille du point de vue japonais, pour se faire une idée plus précise sur le film. Toujours est-il que la seule vision de cette première partie est loin d’emporter l’adhésion. Cela tient à un problème de lisibilité. Non pas que le principe d’enchâssement qui préside à la construction du film le rende difficile à suivre, mais parce que cette complexification, loin d’enrichir le film, vient au contraire ruiner systématiquement les possibilités narratives des quatre récits qui le composent. Ici, non seulement le tout n’est pas supérieur à la somme des parties, mais il en est même inférieur. En voulant tout embrasser – les horreurs de la guerre, l’histoire que l’on récrit pour les besoins de la cause, l’après-guerre des soldats et leur statut éphémère de "héros", les souvenirs qui restent enfouis, etc. –, Eastwood a visé très haut, trop haut peut-être. Quatre films en un n’ont jamais fait un chef-d’œuvre. Surtout sur la guerre. Comme si la force d’un film de guerre tenait avant tout à la simplicité de sa trajectoire, aussi simple et rectiligne, parfois jusqu’à l’abstraction, que le tir d’une balle (voir les films de Walsh ou de Fuller). Eastwood aurait été plus inspiré de sacrifier des pages entières du script, à la manière de ses glorieux aînés, au lieu de nous imposer ce film "gigogne" et ses effets de montage, pour passer d’un récit à l’autre, si appuyés qu’ils en deviennent ridicules.
Bon, tout cela serait accessoire si le thème du film ne s’en trouvait pas, pour le coup, affaibli. Car, et c’est bien là le paradoxe, en complexifiant à l’extrême son matériau, Eastwood finit par étouffer toute la puissance de son sujet, à savoir la confrontation entre les deux types d’image que sont d’un côté, la photo prise par Joe Rosenthal des six marines hissant le drapeau américain au sommet du mont Suribachi, image mondialement connue mais mensongère puisque refaite, et de l’autre, les images intimes que sont le souvenir heureux d’une baignade collective ou, à l’inverse, la vision terrible qui, soixante ans après, hante encore l’un de ces héros, celle d’un soldat américain atrocement mutilé par l’ennemi, image secrète qu’Eastwood se garde bien (heureusement) de nous dévoiler.
On parle toujours de néo-classicisme chez Eastwood. Personnellement, c’est le Eastwood "paléo-moderne" (ou siegelien), celui qui privilégie frontalité et simplicité, que je préfère.

Bref, je pense exactement le contraire, ce qui est assez amusant.
